Plagued by nightmares, Annette yearns to find her anonymous rescuer — the man who saved her life from a near deadly assault. Deep inside she is starving for companionship and a mutually respectful relationship. When Mr. Peter Adsley, an abolitionist pastor dealing with his own emotional baggage, agrees to a clandestine meeting, the event appears providential. But self-doubt, deception, and the schemes of a mutual enemy threaten to keep the pair apart. A phantom adversary will stop at nothing to win Annette’s dowry for himself, even if it means killing Peter.
Starving Hearts Excerpt #3
Sketchbook scene closing
Torn between captivation and shock, Peter watched her put the sketchbook back inside her bag
and slip the strap over her head. Then she looked up at him again.
and slip the strap over her head. Then she looked up at him again.
“I told you, no one else knows about them. And they never will.”
“Indeed.”
“You do not trust me?”
“That is not the issue.”
She held her hands out to him. “Please, will you help me up? I would prefer discussing the issue,
as you call it, in a more equitable location, say perhaps on the bench beside you rather than kneeling
at your feet?” “Yes, of course.” Peter choked back a laugh, but paused when he saw how filthy his
hands were. “But . . . ” She glanced at her own hands, and then smiled. “You needn’t worry;
mine are nearly as bad. In fact, we are both a wretched jumble, but it matters naught.
I would rather be at your side than at your feet.” “Without a doubt,” he answered as he stood
up and took her hands, lifting her nearly weightless form to her feet. Then he froze.

A tingling sensation raced through his fingertips and up his arms. Her skin was like silk
beneath his thumbs. He attempted to clear a lump that had formed in his throat,
but the heat radiating from her touch made it nearly impossible to remember how.
So he simply stood there, holding her hands and gazing down into her eyes.

“Mr. Adsley? I say, Mr. Adsley, may I have my hands back now?”
Her eyes twinkled as she smiled, but before he could think of how to release his grasp,
there was another disturbance.

"The author did a great job, maybe too great a job, describing the slave scenes. Spine tingling and suspenseful. I was biting my nails throughout much of this book." - Amazon Review

"I thoroughly enjoyed this clean, historical fiction. . . enjoyed most that it is not the usual presentation of a regency novel." - Amazon Review
"A lovely story that shows how despicable each of us can be and yet God not only still loves us, but He was willing to die for us." - Amazon Review
